"I want to discover what I can do"

During the first three years of life, a child’s brain absorbs more information from the environment than at any other part of their lifetime. The environment and stimuli that we provide for young children to interact with are fundamental for their development, particularly with regard to motor skills, language acquisition and independence.

Interaction with the environment is fundamental to development

Our Montessori Playgroup (La Casa dei Piccoli) provides an opportunity for children and their parents to come together in a specially prepared environment suited to the developmental needs of young children.

The focus of our program is to help children experience the joy of learning by facilitating their need for independence, order, movement, language and understanding of the world.

Our playgroup is designed to cater for the period of intense mental activity that Maria Montessori termed the ‘absorbent mind,’ where children learn from their environment naturally and spontaneously.

Children learn from their parents first

The Montessori approach for children under three years has a strong emphasis on parent education, recognising the parent as prime educator and preparation of the home environment.

Through the support and guidance of a facilitator, parents increase their awareness of their child’s capabilities and need for independence.

Parents will grow in their role as nurturing caregivers as they gain valuable parenting knowledge about Montessori principles including what experiences they can offer their child in the home environment.

Fostering concentration, agency and independence

Children are able to choose and use materials with minimal adult assistance. Children are afforded the freedom to complete and repeat tasks without interruption or interference. In this way, the child builds up their concentration span and sense of accomplishment.

Children engage in practical life activities and Montessori ‘jobs,’ as well as craft, singing and outdoor activities. These activities initiate their awareness of social interaction and strengthen their physical abilities.

These skills stand children on good stead for learning in Junior Primary.

We look forward to welcoming you
